Full English Transcript of the Interview Many activists outside Iran believe that officials of the Islamic Republic regime have turned Iran into a hell for its people, yet they send their own children abroad to enjoy welfare, security, jobs, and educational and academic opportunities. One of these activists is Ladan Bazargan, a political and human rights activist. Ms. Bazargan, these days you have been very active regarding the case of Fatemeh Larijani. Who is Fatemeh Larijani, where does she live, and what does she do? Hello to you and your viewers, and my condolences to the brave people of Iran. Fatemeh Larijani is the daughter of Ali Larijani. Her mother is from the Motahhari family, whose brothers have all been in power. Along with her uncles and relatives, they have turned our country into an unbearable hell for more than 47 years, and then they send their own children abroad. She continued her studies in medicine and works at a university-affiliated hospital in Atlanta. It is also said that she herself had cancer, which makes this issue even more dramatic, considering that her uncles and relatives chant “Death to America,” while Iran has been under severe sanctions for over 40 years and thousands of Iranians lack access to medicine. Yet they send their own children abroad, to America for treatment, education, and a better life, while calling it the “Great Satan” and burning its flag. This is unacceptable to us. We contacted the U.S. Congress, the Oversight Committee, and the Education Committee, and demanded that this case be investigated. We are also in contact with the State Department, and other friends in Atlanta have organized protests. We will make sure that she cannot continue working at this university. While we believe in the principle of individual criminal responsibility, when you come from a family that has benefited from every kind of privilege and resource, and now you walk freely in the United States without condemning the crimes of this regime, we will not allow this to continue. Ms. Bazargan, can your efforts be supported legally? From a legal standpoint, what can be done? Legally speaking, her case is currently under review. They are examining how she received a green card during President Biden’s administration. The issue is that they lie in their files. I honestly say that I am glad the State Department is reviewing this. We need to see what answers she gave on her green card application and what actions she took. Experience has shown us that pressure works. Just as our campaigns against regime affiliates led to Mohammad Jafar Mahallati, Iran’s ambassador to the UN during the crimes of the 1980s, being expelled from Oberlin College; forced Seyed Mohammad Mousavian, Iran’s ambassador to Germany during the chain murders, to be retired by Princeton University; led to Seyed Ali Akbar Mousavi Khoeini being expelled from George Mason University; and now we are working to remove Shirin Saeedi from the University of Arkansas. Pressure works. People must cooperate and stay active. They should stop saying these actions have no effect. Sustained pressure is effective, and these cases can be pursued legally and stopped. For years, they have used their connections, money spread across institutions, and financial support to universities but pressure works. Ms. Bazargan, do you know who Fatemeh Larijani’s husband is and what he does? Yes, her husband is Seyed Mohammad Kalantar Motamed. He was accepted to Indiana University to study, and Fatemeh accompanied him. Both studied at Indiana University and obtained advanced specializations. Now, I believe he works at an important research university in Cleveland. From a security standpoint, they pose risks to the United States, because they have access to patients’ personal information. These are matters that truly endanger U.S. national security, and we must be vigilant and stop them. Hundreds of students inside the U.S. cannot obtain these positions or enter these specialties so how is it that these two arrive and reach such positions? If you look on Twitter, even former classmates have said that Motamed barely attended classes and was simply given grades. And now he holds such a position. We have spoken to Congress about this as well, and we hope to reach results. Has Ms. Larijani herself reacted or made any statements so far? We have not seen any reaction. Generally, they keep a low profile and try not to engage publicly so they can live quietly here. In my opinion, they are even involved in their father’s money laundering. They do not come here empty-handed, there are certainly hands behind this. They entered this country for larger projects and are endangering U.S. security and the safety of Iranians living in the United States. I’ve heard that she does not use the Larijani surname, is that correct? Well, her profile at the university does show it, but when she sees patients, she uses the name Ardeshir instead of her own family name. We have made several calls to the hospital and filed complaints there as well. We are now considering how to hire a lawyer in Atlanta to pursue this case further. You have explained many points, but as a human rights activist, some people ask: regardless of numbers, there are those who say, “Her father is Larijani, but she herself has the right to life.” As a human rights activist, what is your response to them? As I said, we believe in the principle of individual criminal responsibility. But you cannot use all of your father’s privileges throughout your life and reach where you are, and then claim neutrality. If this woman were an ordinary person, she would not have become a doctor. AAIRIA strongly condemns the recent statements by Ali Larijani, which include implicit threats toward U.S. soldiers while attempting to justify or downplay the Islamic Republic’s violent repression of peaceful protesters in Iran. Larijani’s posture is a textbook case of regime hypocrisy. While he and his brothers have spent decades as senior officials within a system responsible for killing, imprisoning, and torturing Iranians, he has simultaneously benefited from the very freedoms and protections he denounces. His family has relied on the United States for medical treatment, education, and professional opportunity, privileges categorically denied to ordinary Iranians under the regime he helped sustain. It is unacceptable for an architect and defender of state repression to threaten American lives rhetorically while enjoying the advantages of Western democratic societies through his family. This duality exposes the moral bankruptcy of the Islamic Republic’s ruling elite. AAIRIA calls on U.S. authorities to immediately review the immigration and visa status of Fatemeh Larijani and her husband, and to assess whether continued residence in the United States is consistent with U.S. laws, national security considerations, and the values of accountability and human rights. The United States must not serve as a safe haven, directly or indirectly, for the families of officials who participate in crimes against humanity while publicly menacing American interests and lives. نویسنده: نِل گلاکمن  هجدهم دسامبر ۲۰۲۵ دانشگاه آرکانزاس مدیر «مرکز ملک فهد برای مطالعات خاورمیانه» را برکنار کرده و اکنون در حال بررسی اخراج او از جایگاه هیئت‌علمیِ دارای تِنور است؛ اقدامی که تنشِ چندماهه میان این استاد دانشگاه و مدیریت را تشدید کرده است. در نامه‌ای که روز سه‌شنبه ارسال شد، برایان رینز، رئیس کالج هنرها و علوم، به شیرین سعیدی، دانشیار علوم سیاسی، اعلام کرد که اخراج او «با دلیل» را توصیه می‌کند. رینز به‌عنوان دلایل این توصیه به نامه‌هایی که سعیدی امضا کرده، پست‌های او در شبکه‌های اجتماعی با محتوای ضداسرائیلی و اظهارنظر درباره درگیری‌های دیگر خاورمیانه، و نیز شهادتی اشاره کرد برای پژوهش و اطلاع‌رسانی، نه القا و تبلیغ، را تضعیف می‌کند.» سخنگوی دانشگاه تأیید کرد که سعیدی «تا طی مراحل بعدی» با حفظ حقوق به مرخصی فرستاده شده است. سعیدی به کرونیکل گفت قربانی یک «کارزار تخریب» سعیدی از مدیریت مرکز مخالفت کرد و نوشت: «دلایل محکمی وجود دارد که نشان می‌دهد این تصمیم انگیزه سیاسی داشته و عمدتاً به‌خاطر سخنان استاد سعیدی اتخاذ شده است؛ امری که اصول آزادی آکادمیک، حقوق متمم اول و سیاست‌های دانشگاه را نقض می‌کند.» «مختل‌کننده و آسیب‌زا» نامه ۵ دسامبر رینز درباره برکناری سعیدی از مدیریت مرکز، جزئیات بیشتری نسبت به نامه‌ای که سه‌شنبه توصیه به اخراج می‌کرد، ارائه می‌دهد. رینز نوشت By Nell GluckmanDecember 18, 2025 The University of Arkansas flagship has removed the director of its King Fahd Center forMiddle East Studies and is considering firing her from her tenured faculty role — anescalation of a monthslong conflict between the Iranian American academic and theadministration. In a Tuesday letter the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Brian Raines, told ShirinSaeidi, an associate professor of political science, that he recommended she be fired forcause. Raines cited as reasons letters she’d signed and her social-media posts expressinganti-Israel views and opining about other conflicts in the Middle East, in addition totestimony she submitted on university letterhead in the 2023 appeal of a case involving anIranian convicted of war crimes. The justification largely mirrored a December 5 letterfrom Raines removing her as director. Saeidi shared the letters with The Chronicle; auniversity spokesperson confirmed their authenticity. “Such statements are likely to create a chilling effect on many Israelis or Jews consideringinvolvement with our Middle East studies program, and others, as well,” Raines wrote inthe December 5 letter. “It also undermines any perception of our program as a scholarlyand objective source of research and information rather than indoctrination.” Thespokesperson confirmed Saeidi had been placed on leave with pay “pending furtherprocedures.” Saeidi told The Chronicle she is the victim of a smear campaign led by a political activistwho opposed her involvement in the 2023 legal proceeding. The university caved tooutside pressure, she alleged, and punished her because of her speech. She plans to fightthe decision.  “This is very concerning for everyone who is committed to academic freedom,” she said. Some of Saeidi’s public statements did come to the university’s attention thanks to thepolitical activist, Lawdan Bazargan, who spoke to The Chronicle. Bazargan leads a groupthat “works to expose individuals in Western institutions who normalize or sanitize theIranian regime’s crimes,” she said in an email. In an interview, Bazargan said that whenshe hadn’t initially heard a response from the university, she then alerted board membersand state legislators. “It’s not about freedom of speech,” Bazargan said. “It’s about hermisusing her role and resources.” Bazargan has also raised concerns about a book written by Saeidi, including allegationsthat she used material without permission. The book’s publisher, Cambridge UniversityPress, said in an email that it is investigating. Saeidi said she provided the press withmaterials that would disprove the allegations. The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression is reviewing Saeidi’s case todetermine whether to get involved, said Zach Greenberg, of the organization’s facultylegal defense team. It’s difficult and unusual for a university to fire a tenured professor, hesaid, and “it appears that the misconduct here involves speech.” Two other tenuredprofessors who faced criticism for vocal pro-Palestinian activism have been fired sincethe October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel. The Middle East Studies Association, or MESA, wrote a letter to the University ofArkansas’s president, chancellor, and arts and sciences dean opposing the decision to remove her as director of the center. “There is good reason to believe that this decision was politically motivated and takenprimarily because of Professor Saeidi’s speech,” the MESA letter said, “thereby violatingthe principles of academic freedom, her First Amendment rights, and university policy.” ‘Disruptive and Damaging’ The Arkansas dean’s December 5 letter about Saeidi’s removal as center director includesmore detail than the one sent Tuesday recommending her termination. First, Raines wrote that he had warned her on July 1 about submitting a letter to aSwedish court using university letterhead. He said she did not include a disclaimer sayingshe was speaking on behalf of herself, not the university. The 2022 trial in Sweden involved a case against a former Iranian prison official namedHamid Nouri, who was sentenced to life in prison for his role in a 1988 massacre ofthousands of prisoners in Iran. In 2023, Nouri lost an appeal but was later returned toIran in a prisoner exchange. Saeidi said her letter was not written in support of Nouri,but it was used by his defense team. She told The Chronicle that she informed a universityoffice that oversees conflict-of-interest issues about her planned testimony and was toldthat there were none. Raines also wrote in his letter that on August 22, the university received a complaintabout two letters Saeidi had signed. In those letters she had listed her affiliation with theuniversity, but again did not note that she was speaking only for herself, the dean said.The complaint also mentioned social-media posts about Gaza, Israel, and Iran, he wrote.The university investigated whether the comments were antisemitic, Raines wrote, andcleared Saeidi in November. The dean next pointed to social-media posts on X that were also “received by theuniversity,” he wrote. In one, Saeidi wrote that “Israel is a terrorist and genocidal statethat must be dismantled by international forces.”  “It is disruptive and damaging for the director of the university’s Middle East studiesprogram to post inflammatory messages of this sort,” Raines wrote. Saeidi said she was advocating for “the international community stopping the genocide,”and “using the power of international organizations” to do so. Raines also took issue with Saeidi’s posts and public statements about Ayatollah SeyyedAli Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader. He cited a November post on X in which she calledhim “the leader who kept Iran intact during the Israeli attack,” and wrote: “May Godprotect you and the Iranian people from the Israeli regime.” Saeidi said she wasresponding to evidence that the Iranian leader might be assassinated, and she was gratefulthat, as she saw it, he helped keep the recent conflict with Israel short. But her social-media posts, Raines wrote, “could be taken as advocacy for a militaryinvasion and destruction of a U.S. ally” — such as Israel. The posts, he said, “undercut anynotion of diverse intellectual opportunity,” and “are irresponsible for someone in yourprogram-leadership position.” The dean added that she posted on X on December 3 that the university had approved herparticipation in the trial, “letterhead and all.” Raines argued that she had not receivedsuch permission. اتحاد علیه مهره‌های رژیم اسلامی این بیانیه را در واکنش به آغاز روند رسمی برای اخراج شیرین سعیدی از مقام استادی در دانشگاه آرکانزاس و تصمیم انتشارات دانشگاه کمبریج برای آغاز تحقیق درباره اتهامات جدی سوءرفتار علمی و تقلب اکادمیک صادر می‌کند. بیانیه مطبوعاتی | برای انتشار فوری   هفدهم دسامبر ۲۰۲۵ کمبریج، بریتانیا و کالیفرنیا — پس از ماه‌ها مکاتبه و پیگیری مستمر از سوی اتحاد علیه مهره‌های رژیم اسلامی ، دانشگاه آرکانزاس شیرین سعیدی را از سمت مدیر مرکز مطالعات خاورمیانه برکنار کرده و گام‌های اولیه برای خاتمه همکاری او در مقام استادی را برداشته است. به موازات این اقدام، انتشارات دانشگاه کمبریج به طور رسمی تحقیق درباره اتهامات سوء رفتار علمی در کتاب سال ۲۰۲۲ سعیدی با عنوان Women and the Islamic Republic: How Gendered Citizenship Conditions the Iranian State را آغاز کرده است. این تحول گامی مهم در مسیر پاسخ‌گویی نسبت به بازماندگان زندان‌های جمهوری اسلامی است که تجربه‌ها و هویت‌هایشان بنا به ادعاها جعل یا تحریف شده است. ما از تصمیم انتشارات دانشگاه کمبریج برای جدی گرفتن این اتهامات استقبال می‌کنیم. برای مدت طولانی، صدای بازماندگان نادیده گرفته شد و روایت‌های آنان بدون رضایت تحریف و استفاده شد. بررسی دقیق و مستقل از سوی یک کمیته بی‌طرف برای بازگرداندن اعتماد به پژوهش‌های مرتبط با دوره انقلاب ایران و دهه خونین ۶۰ ضروری است. این تحقیق در پی شکایات مستند چندین زندانی سیاسی پیشین که در کتاب سعیدی از آنان نام برده شده، آغاز شده است. این افراد در اظهارنظرهای سوگندخورده اعلام کرده‌اند که هرگز به انجام مصاحبه یا نقل‌قول رضایت نداده‌اند و بخش‌های مهمی از روایت‌هایشان جعل یا به‌صورت گزینشی دستکاری شده است. اتحاد علیه مهره‌های رژیم اسلامی همچنین مدارکی را به مراجع کمبریج ارائه کرده که نشان می‌دهد سعیدی از سربرگ رسمی دانشگاه آرکانزاس برای حمایت از حمید نوری، جنایتکار جنگی محکوم‌شده، استفاده کرده است؛ امری که نگرانی‌های جدی درباره قضاوت حرفه‌ای و سلامت علمی او ایجاد می‌کند. درخواست برای اقدام‌های تکمیلی در حالی که اتحاد علیه مهره‌های رژیم اسلامی از تحقیق انتشارات دانشگاه کمبریج استقبال می‌کند، ما اطمینان داریم که رساله دکتری سعیدی که مبنای این کتاب بوده نیز جعل‌شده و متکی بر مصاحبه‌های ساختگی و منابع تحریف‌شده است. همچنین به نظر می‌رسد این پژوهش از کمک «سازمان تبلیغات اسلامی» جمهوری اسلامی ایران بهره‌مند شده باشد که نگرانی‌های جدی درباره دخالت دولت خارجی و نفوذ ایدئولوژیک ایجاد می‌کند. بر این اساس، از دانشگاه کمبریج می‌خواهیم فوراً بررسی مستقل خود را آغاز کرده و مطابق با سیاست‌های سلامت پژوهش، اقدامات قاطع از جمله لغو مدرک دکتری را در صورت تأیید این تخلفات انجام دهد. ما به عنوان پژوهشگران و مدافعان حقوق بشر به آزادی دانشگاهی باور داریم، اما این آزادی باید بر پایه حقیقت و احترام به کرامت انسان‌هایی باشد که روایتشان بازگو می‌شود. ما همچنان متعهد به حمایت از بازماندگان نظام زندان‌های ایران و پاسخ‌گو کردن نهادهایی هستیم که بسترشان برای سفیدشویی جنایت علیه بشریت مورد سوءاستفاده قرار می‌گیرد. #FireSaeidi

December 17, 2025 Cambridge, U.K. & Compton, CA — After months of sustained correspondence and advocacy by the Alliance Against Islamic Regime of Iran Apologists (AAIRIA), the University of Arkansas removed Shirin Saeidi from her position as Director of the Center for Middle East Studies and has taken initial steps toward terminating her professorship. In parallel, Cambridge University Press has formally opened an investigation into allegations of academic misconduct in Saeidi’s 2022 book, Women and the Islamic Republic: How Gendered Citizenship Conditions the Iranian State. This development marks a significant step toward accountability for survivors of the Islamic Republic’s prisons whose experiences and identities were allegedly fabricated or misrepresented in the book. We welcome Cambridge University Press’s decision to take these allegations seriously. For too long, survivors’ voices have been ignored while their experiences were distorted and used without consent. A rigorous review by an independent committee is essential to restore trust in scholarship on Iran’s revolutionary period. The investigation follows detailed complaints from multiple former political prisoners cited in Saeidi’s book, who state in sworn affidavits that they never consented to interviews or quotations and that key elements of their accounts were fabricated or selectively altered. AAIRIA has also submitted documentation showing that Saeidi used University of Arkansas letterhead to advocate on behalf of convicted war criminal Hamid Nouri, further raising serious concerns about her professional judgment and academic integrity. Call for Further Action While AAIRIA welcomes the Cambridge University Press investigation, we are confident that Dr. Saeidi’s doctoral dissertation, which formed the basis of the book, is likewise fabricated and relies on falsified interviews and misrepresented sources. The research also appears to have benefited from assistance provided by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Islamic Ideology Dissemination Organization, raising serious concerns about foreign state involvement and ideological influence. Accordingly, we call on the University of Cambridge to immediately initiate its own independent review and to take decisive action under its research integrity policies, including the revocation of her Ph.D. if these violations are confirmed. As scholars and advocates for human rights, we believe in academic freedom, but that freedom must be grounded in respect for truth and the dignity of those whose stories are told.
